Aims and Functions
The aims of the CHeRel are to:
- facilitate research which may contribute to the promotion, protection and maintenance of the health of the public;
- facilitate the planning, evaluation and delivery of health services;
- contribute to knowledge regarding research methods relating to health data collection, linkage of health-related data and compilation and use of health-related statistics generally;
- to allow the outcomes of activities related to the above objects to be available for the benefit of the public and to contribute to knowledge on an open and equitable basis.
- carry out linkage of health-related data in accordance with all ethical, legal, privacy and confidentiality requirements; and
- provide a mechanism for access to these linked data for purposes which fulfil the objects of the CHeReL.
- The CHeReL Management Committee
- The CHeReL Community Advisory Committee advises the CHeReL Manager and CHeReL Management Committee on issues of community interest in the CHeReL.

Governance, Management and Reporting
The CHeReL was established in 2006 by the Cancer Institute NSW and NSW Health. The Clinical Excellence Commission, the Sax Institute, the University of Newcastle, the University of New South Wales , the University of Western Sydney, the University of Sydney and ACT Health are also members of the CHeReL. Members are represented on the CHeReL Management Committee.
The CHeReL has two committees:
The Cancer Institute NSW is the host organisation for the CHeReL and employs all staff required to operate the CHeReL. The Manager of the CHeReL reports to the CHeReL Management Committee and to the Cancer Institute NSW.
The CHeReL reports to the NSW Population and Health Services Research Ethics Committee, which has given approval for the CHeReL to use personal information (from selected health databases) to create and maintain of a database of linked and unlinked records.
